This week is National Assisted Living Week, and the 2026 theme is “Shining Through the Years” — a nod to the residents who’ve lived full lives, and to NCAL’s own 25th anniversary. But there’s another way to read it: the caregivers who stay. The ones who show up for year five, year ten, year twenty. Those are the people worth talking about this week. Because right now, most of them aren’t staying.

Residents are arriving sicker, respiratory conditions are more common than ever, and the nurses at the bedside are the first line of care.

In the last blog, we explored how environment shapes wellness. A hallway can become more than a corridor, a dining room can influence conversation, and outdoor spaces can invite people back into movement and connection.

Wellness is often associated with youth—fitness routines, mindfulness practices, personal development. Yet the desire for growth, purpose, and connection does not disappear with age. Even later in life, people continue to look for meaning in their days.

Everywhere we turn, we’re offered a better version of ourselves. Stronger bodies. Sharper minds. Longer lives. Better mornings. Wellness has become a lifestyle, a movement, a thriving industry.

When someone enters long-term care, they bring a lifetime with them—decades of love, loss, resilience, illness, joy, hardship, and change. They bring memories of raising families, building careers, surviving wars, navigating discrimination, enduring heartbreak, and celebrating milestones. And sometimes, they bring trauma.
